In Abel Ferrara's murky adaptation of William Gibson's short story, the cyberpunk world recedes in favor of the director's familiar obsession with burnt-out middle-aged men seeking redemption through sexual healing. A pair of corporate raiders (Christoper Walken and Willem Dafoe) attempt to seduce a heavyweight scientist Yoshitako Amano into switching his corporate allegiance, but, as usual, their plans go awry. Ferrara's nearly incoherent film is more successful as soft-core porn than anything else. Although the film is set at locations in cities around the world, it might just as well have been shot at a badly lit warehouse in Lodi, NJ, given the difficulty of seeing what's happening at times. Dafoe and Walken both make a game effort to lend some substance to the proceedings, and Asia Argento, as the prostitute hired to keep the scientist happy, is a welcome distraction, but none of them can save this one.
