Review by Hans J. Wollstein

A rare surviving independent serial, The Mystery Trooper bears all the stamps of early talkies: primitive acting -- Robert Frazer, the too old leading man, is especially atrocious -- dull direction and long sequences without any sound whatsoever and with characters endlessly either mounting or dismounting their horses. The plot, in contrast, dates back to the silent era, which saw countless serials where people were trying to put together pieces of maps to mines, inheritances, lost cities, etc. The presence of a mystery hero -- in this case a cloaked Northwest Mounted Police Officer -- is also standard issue silent serial. That said, however, The Mystery Trooper survives in surprisingly fine condition and it is always fun to watch ace B-Western villain Charles King in action. King, needless to say, towers over the rest of the cast in acting ability.
