Akan Satayev's historical drama Myn Bala tells the tale of how a teenager living in Kazahkstan in the first half of the 18th century assembled a ragtag group of brave youngsters and led them in a series of battles and assaults that helped free their country from oppression at the hands of an occupying force intent on reforming and continuing the global empire created by Genghis Khan. At the same time, the adolescent must come to terms with the typical coming-of-age problems that beset everyone, including negotiating his first love.
