Review by Craig Butler

Essentially a programmer, Men Without Names is worth viewing primarily for Fred MacMurray's early starring performance. MacMurray was a surprisingly versatile actor, whose reputation as being someone who basically played nice guys is belied by his outstanding "immoral" turns in films such as Double Indemnity and The Apartment. In this early vehicle, MacMurray is nice, but he's nobody's fool. He's as tough as the hoods he has to hunt down, and it's easy to believe that he could infiltrate a gang of bloodthirsty killers. MacMurray's physical presence also works to his advantage. Madge Evans is fine as "the woman," and the rest of the cast is adequate, but the screenplay is pretty thin stuff -- nothing that hasn't been done much better elsewhere. The writers seem to have been playing around with the Robin Hood legend -- witness the last names of MacMurray and Evans' characters -- but it doesn't really add anything overall. Ralph Murphy's direction is serviceable, with the factory shoot-out quite effective, although a similar situation was better done in the 1934 The Man Who Knew Too Much. Pretty standard stuff all around, but MacMurray makes it worthwhile.
