Tchaikovsky's operatic adaptation of Pushkin's historical take on the legendary Cossack chieftain is staged by the Kirov Opera and Ballet in this release of a 1996 performance directed by Valery Gergiev. Nikolai Putilin, Sergei Aleksashkin, and Larissa Diadkova lead and all-Russian cast, and Valery Gergiev conducts the Kirov Orchestra, Opera Chorus and Ballet at the Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg. .
