Kay Francis simply embodied Hollywood chic in 1932 and her later infamous problems with sibilants were less discussed than her wardrobe. The brothers Warner were only too happy to parade the lady in an endless fashion show and apparently saw little reason to also award her good scripts. In Man Wanted, she is once again a very modern woman, early '30s style, who is not content with being just the little wife. In comes David Manners to provide a bit of male glamour and Francis is sold. Not so, perhaps, a modern audience, who cannot help but wonder what all the fuss is about.
