“Like a cry of Nature” – This expression is the guiding topic of the festival programme 2009 and also marks its opening with Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony. To Mahler, nature and art are not opposed; rather he felt that one teaches the other in a symbiosis. The opening programme also treats listeners to a spectacular début as the twenty-two-year-old Chinese pianist Yuja Wang plays Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto. In her Lucerne performances she can display the full range of her artistry as Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto demands, not only lyricism and intimacy, but also brilliancy and virtuosity.
