In April 1983, Shining Path, a left-wing revolutionary Maoist group with an armed guerrilla presence in the Peruvian countryside, committed a massacre in the farming village of Santiago de Lucanamarca. Following the arrival of Peru's Truth and Reconciliation Commission to exhume the victims, many of whom were women and children, both as evidence in a trial against Shining Path leaders and to return the remains for proper burial. But the commission's efforts also reawaken old enmities among the villagers.
