Review by Derek Armstrong

Tom Cruise historians and fans of Porky's-style sex comedies are about the only ones who might appreciate this mirthless coming-of-age story. Years before he graduated to critical acclaim, Curtis Hanson directed this immature tale about a foursome of Southern California teens eager to leave their collective virginity in Tijuana. It's the kind of movie that delights in jokes about Spanish fly and "rubbers." In only his third movie, Cruise doesn't do much to distinguish himself, and Shelley Long -- whose famously misguided movie career was then only just beginning -- is onboard for the thankless role of an unhappy wife who joins the crew for a spur-of-the-moment divorce. Hanson has a little fun conjuring a garish and profane Tijuana, but there's not much else to smile about as Cruise and his buddies continually run afoul of the locals in unsurprising ways, with consequences that are too heavy for such a frivolous movie. With its choppy pace and its tone of sneering shallowness, Losin' It is downright flaccid.
