In chapter six of Lightning Bryce (mistakenly titled "Robes of Destruction" in the surviving print), Lightning (Jack Hoxie) manages to use the severed rope to swing himself into Dopey Sam's opium den and rescue Kate (Ann Little). Unfortunately, he is himself captured by Solvang (Paul Hurst), who is in league with Sam. With the help of Ming Toy of the rival Sing Lu tong, whom he once saved from a couple of racist cowboys, Lightning outwits Solvang and his gang, regaining in the process both the knife and the string that together will reveal the location of his inheritance.
