Review by Craig Butler

Screwball comedy is difficult to do right; making a screwball musical, such as Let's Do It Again, is even harder to do. Throw in the fact that Again has to compete with the memory of the property on which it is based (i.e., the classic The Awful Truth) and it becomes clear that the creators really should have thrown in the towel before they ever tackled this one. Actually, "tackled" is too strong a verb to be applied to this milksop of a musical; it feels as if the writers used all their energy just getting to the typewriter and all their imagination in figuring out how to change the ribbon. How else to explain the tired, cliché-ridden mess that they have made of The Awful Truth? The score is somewhat better. The songs are hardly what you would call distinguished, but they are lively and they relieve the tedium that surrounds them. The cast tries hard, but faced with the material, Jane Wyman and Ray Milland have no chance of competing with Irene Dunne and Cary Grant from the earlier film. Wyman in particular does her best and is surprisingly good in the song-and-dance sequences -- but it's still not the kind of performance that can save this kind of endeavor.
