Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Spanish singing star Imperio Argentina made her film debut in the Argentine musical La Maja de Los Cantares. The story concerns the efforts of a Spanish singer to make the big time in Bueno Aires: in other words, the star is essentially playing herself. Several Argentine leading men begged off from the film, worried that their association with the Spanish leading lady might have political repercussions. Finally, Argentina was paired with Mario Gabarron, yet another Spaniard. In English-speaking regions, the film was released as The Songstress.
