Synopsis by Mark Deming
Through much of the 20th Century, Guatemala was a nation ruled by a severe military government, and while guerilla forces fought for a more democratic rule, they were dealt with harshly by Guatemalan authorities, and thousands of people were abducted, killed and tortured during the 1980s with no little evidence available to connect the military police with their crimes. In 2005, an explosion tore through Guatemala City, the nation's capitol, and revealed a shocking secret -- the hidden files of the National Police, documenting the kidnapping, torture and murder of men, women and children during the years of uprising. Filmmaker Uli Stelzner records the efforts of archivists to preserve and catalog these important documents and reveal the terrible truth behind Guatemala's little reported period of genocide in the documentary La Isla: Archives Of A Tragedy. The film was an official selection at the 2010 Silverdocs Documentary Film Festival.
