Philippine director Lav Diaz debuts with this unnervingly intense tale of crime and retribution. An investigative reporter (Angel Aquino) stumbles upon Serafin (Raymond Bagatsing), a simple farm hand, while inquiring about a series of grisly murders. In a desperate attempt to raise money for his sick wife's treatment, Serafin gets conned into kidnapping a rich Chinese couple's baby. The result, involving the child and a psychotic band of mobsters, is bloody and horrific. This film was screened at the 1999 Toronto Film Festival.
