Jimmy Wang Yu is renowned in the world of kung fu flick fandom for having churned out some of the most bizarre comic-bookish kung fu movies ever made. In terms of content, Knight Errant does not disappoint: it features a killer clan of Japanese martial-arts experts headed by an impossibly tough, karate-chopping grandma. However, Knight Errant doesn't quite deliver on the promise of its eccentric revenge-melodrama setup: the villainous trio of high-kicking brothers doesn't prove to be the threat it is made out to be and the finale lacks the all-stops-out craziness that defined past Wang Yu vehicles like The One Armed Swordsman and Master of the Flying Guillotine. However, Knight Errant still offers enough to please the already-converted: Wang Yu delivers a likeably macho performance here and gets plenty of chances to deploy his rough-and-tumble, brawling style of martial arts. The end result is a second-tier effort for this star, but Knight Errant offers enough no-frills action to please hardcore martial arts film enthusiasts.
