Synopsis by Mark Deming

Filmmaker Khalid Gill offers an honest and compassionate profile of Pakistan's transgendered community in this documentary. Male-to-female transsexuals -- known as "Khusras" -- exist as part of an underclass in Pakistan that, while growing in numbers, is largely ignored by mainstream society and most Khusras must turn to one another for support. In Kiss The Moon, Gill profiles a number of transgendered Pakistanis, focusing in particular on three pre-operative transsexuals, Aini, Sonya and Boota. Sonya is emotionally reeling from an abrupt breakup with her boyfriend, Boota speaks of her desire to have a sex change operation, settle down and raise a child, and Aini confronts a society that would prefer to ignore her by making her living as a street vendor. Kiss The Moon also looks into the superstitions and lore that surround transsexuals in Pakistan, including the widespread belief that they can will good or bad fortune upon others. Kiss The Moon was an official selection at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival.
