Originally titled Jonas, Dejme Tomu ve Stredu (translation: Jonas, Say, For Instance, on Wednesday), this Czech film is a celebration of one of Eastern Europe's most influential theater groups. The Semafor, created in Prague in the early 1960s, has managed to weather nearly three decades despite the Soviet intervention of 1968. Among the more illustrious alumni of the Semafor are directors Jiri Menzel and Milos Forman, and composer-lyricist Jiri Suchy, who adapted the film from a play by Magdalena Dietl, and who co-stars with Jiri Molavcova. The two Jiris portray a comedy team, presenting highlights from the Semaphor's past theatrical highlights. Also featured in Jonas 39.5 C are tantalizing snippets from the Forman-directed Celebration (1963), which spotlighted the Semafor troupe in its youthful prime.
