Synopsis by Mark Deming
Many young people dream of careers in the performing arts, but even those who are aware of the long odds against them are sometimes surprised by just how competitive an actor's life can be. Filmmaker Bachir Bensaddek offers a glimpse into the struggles of thirteen would-be thespians in the documentary J'me Voyais Deja. The Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Montréal is one of Canada's best-respected schools for the performing arts, and Bensaddek and his crew follow the thirteen members of a graduating class, all of whom are vying for a place in the conservatory's graduate studies program. However, only two students can be accepted, and as the young actors work hard at refining their craft, they also come to realize that they'll be pitted against their best friends for this opportunity -- and that most of them won't make it. Meanwhile, one of the students gets a lucky break as a professional, but their future in the business seems no more certain than that of their friends. J'me Voyais Deja was an official selection at the 2008 Montreal World Film Festival.
