Review by Karl Williams

The greasy, overrated fingerprints of hack job screenwriter Joe Eszterhas are all over this grisly, dumb, and offensive piece of garbage. He and director William Friedkin burn a lot of fuel in an effort to be "sexy" but only succeed in alienating fans of this type of thriller and those expecting an intelligent twist on the genre. David Caruso is a passive hero, floating through the film on a haze of half-proven innuendo and clues conveniently provided at the predetermined plot points, while Linda Fiorentino is a predictable femme fatale, a role with which she has already been pigeonholed. There's a great chase scene in the middle of it all, the director calling upon his reliable action sequence muse, but it and many other developments in the story are never quite explained. Jade has loads of mood, atmosphere, and attitude. What it lacks is a compelling story that would make anybody care.
