Synopsis by Mark Deming

An intellectually stunted woman and her unstable brother struggle with life in an industrial wasteland in this drama from South Korean filmmaker Zhang Lu. Jin-seo (Yoon Jin-seo) was born in 1977, not long after a massive explosion at a train station rocked the town of Iksan, where she was raised. Jin-seo is of below-normal intelligence and through she's able to hold down a menial job as a janitor, her brother Tae-woong (Eum Tae-woong) must keep an eye on her to insure her safety. Jin-seo is the frequent target of sexual predators, and has been left pregnant by rapists on more than one occasion; Jin-seo's limited understanding of sex prevents her from being especially upset by these events, but Tae-woong is often driven to rage by the way his sister is victimized, leading to a final explosion of anger and vengeance. Iri (the title comes from the former name of the city of Iksan) was an official entry at the 2008 Rome Film Festival.
