Synopsis by Steve Blackburn

African-American author and commentator Haskell Ward hosts this third video of a series that examines the history of black Americans. This installment focuses on how a distinctly African-American culture developed from the earliest days of colonial American slavery instituted at Jamestown, VA. Dr. Charles Eric Lincoln, who is one of the foremost experts on Black Muslims, provides insight into the various ways that African heritage has been maintained, modified, and expressed throughout the centuries, and how it has influenced white Americans. Highlights include an introduction by the late Arthur Ashe and archival footage. Ward is the author of African Development Reconsidered: New Perspectives from the Continent.
