"Sometimes you're too smart for a pretty girl. You should be more dumb, like you look," J. Carroll Naish tells Judith Barrett at one point in Illegal Traffic, adding an extra vowel to every word in the long tradition of Hollywood hoodlums. But that's the kind of movie this little potboiler is: broad performances and plenty of noise and gusto. And leave it to the Paramount B-unit to come up with yet another racket to be busted by no-nonsense G-Men like Robert Preston. The latter acts with easy charm and would soon reappear in much better films than Illegal Traffic.
