Review by Craig Butler

Fans of campy, gory horror flicks will have a field day with Horrors of the Black Museum, a late 1950s entry that is built around a number of "gimmicky" deaths, a la the later The Abominable Doctor Phibes. Museum isn't as "coherent" as Phibes and other ,better examples of this genre, but it is macabre and disturbing -- and often unintentionally funny. Of course, much of the humor depends upon the viewer's ability to distance himself from the horrible goings-on, to be able to laugh at mutiliations and grizzly deaths. If one cannot do this, there's little reason to watch Museum, as it features a screenplay of only minor interest. The hypnotism angle is laughable, the "disguise" make-up is ridiculous, the premise is silly and the dialogue is deliciously bad. Still, there's some sociological interest to be had, if one views Museum as an example of 1950s attitudes toward women and sex. Arthur Crabtree's direction is typical for the genre; it's not good, but it's appropriately over-the-top and provides the requisite punch in the "money" scenes, while dragging insufferably during the in-between moments. And the acting? It's all one expects -- ripe and flowing on one hand, stiff and amateurish on the other.
