Hollywood Homicide is a stale buddy cop movie that doesn't really succeed as either a drama or a comedy. The rapport between the two leads is vitally important in this kind of film, but Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett have no chemistry. The bland Hartnett displays relatively little personality in this movie, while Ford's character seems tired, grouchy, and not particularly likeable. Furthermore, the story doesn't contain much suspense (it's clear "whodunit" early in the film), although several plot threads are left unresolved at the end. Also, some plot details just don't make sense, such as the reason for the overlong chase sequence near the end of the film. There are a few good jokes and several indifferent ones in Hollywood Homicide, as well as enough clichés to make you wonder why director Ron Shelton didn't approach the screenplay (which he wrote with Robert Souza) as an exercise in camp. It's not a terrible movie, and sometimes enough of the pieces fall into place to be momentarily interesting. Overall, however, Hollywood Homicide is just run-of-the-mill.
