"Contrived" is perhaps not the correct word to describe the impossible goings-on in this absurd drama, which was based on a play by William Speyer. "Ludicrous" probably comes closer. Not only does Ricardo Cortez's character defend his wife's lover, he himself is a suspect in the case, which, as it turns out, is no murder at all but a suicide. Cortez does the best he can with an impossible role, but is soundly defeated by leading lady Barbara Robbins' inexperience and Worthington Miner's lackluster direction. In contrast, the always interesting Dorothy Burgess plays her "murder victim" with all the nastiness she can muster -- and that is considerable -- and Margaret Hamilton has a funny bit as a milliner named Madame Du Barry.
