Softcore sex fare from the early 1980's often tends to be dull outside the sex scenes but Hanna D., La Ragazza Del Vondel Park is an amusing exception to this rule. In fact, the film's crazy plot is every bit as entertaining as any of its softcore romps: the script's blend of sub-Douglas Sirk melodrama and anti-drug hysteria gives it a real kinetic charge. Better yet, everyone overacts wildly in this film, with heroine Ann Gisel-Glass constantly going into hysterics and weeping (frequently while nude) to service the film's relentless pursuit of cheap thrills and Karin Schubert offering a hilariously histrionic turn as her boozy mother. Elsewhere, Fausto Lombardi is unintentionally funny as the film's hard-boiled villain, who seems to exclusively spew hard-boiled cliches for all his dialogue. Even the film's nice-guy hero, Sebastiano Somma, gets a gut-bustingly funny moment near the end where he flips out while delivering an over-the-top dramatic monologue. Rino Di Silvestro's direction keeps all this hysteria together by piling on the sleaze with a certain, music video-derived artsiness and a fairly skillful use of real Amsterdam locations. He even manages an unlikely happy ending for his addle-brained protagonists. In short, Hanna D., La Ragazza del Vondel Park is a camp classic and guaranteed to entertain fans of sleazy Euro-trash.
