Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter
This performance video presents the talented company of the highly acclaimed stage production, Gumboots. The title comes from the boots that black men in South Africa wore to work in the dark and inhumane conditions in the coal mines of South Africa. The oppressive system did not allow speaking; the men communicated through the instruments of their ankle chains and gumboots. Their story is told here with a cappella singing and percussion instruments -- and gumboots. The high-energy performance with its joyous, inspirational music has captured the imagination of audiences around the world.
