Synopsis by Hal Erickson

This ill-matched British double bill was released in the US as part of the Elvira's Thriller Video cassette series. The voluptuous "mistress of the dark" Elvira (Cassandra Peterson), introduces both films, spouting wisecracks at crucial plot junctures whether we like it or not. Directed by Don Sharp, the 51-minute Guardian of the Abyss is a barely tolerable tale of devil worship. The Carpathian Eagle, directed by Francis Megahy and running 60 minutes, is the better of the two films, but not by much. This one involves a London cop looking for a serial killer--who's closer to the cop than he suspects. Both films probably deserved Elvira's snide commentary, though this parasitic form of entertainment is more entertainingly handled on a weekly basis by the Comedy Channel's Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
