Review by Craig Butler

With a different male lead, Green Mansions might have been a good movie; with a different male lead and a director who could tap into his unbridled imagination, it might have been a great movie. As it is, Mansions is disappointing -- at times laughably so -- despite a luminous performance from the lithe and lovely Audrey Hepburn. True, Hepburn is not absolutely 100 percent perfect casting; there's a certain degree of sophistication that clings to her, a part of her that she can't shake no matter how hard she tries, and it manages to seep through here on occasion. But she's otherwise so good in a part that no other star actresses of the time could possibly have pulled off, that one will gladly forgive her for this little flaw. Not so lucky is Anthony Perkins, who is essentially miscast from the word "go." He's somewhat acceptable when filling the "romantic" part of "romantic hero" -- not great, but OK -- but he falls short when trying to be a "hero." The role requires someone who is believably tough and macho, and here Perkins falls woefully short. Mel Ferrer's direction is similarly lacking; it's not that it's actually bad, but material this delicate and difficult requires a director who is masterful and visionary, and this, Ferrer is not. Hepburn aside, all the film has to recommend it is some truly stunning location shooting (which doesn't always match so well with the obvious studio shots). These two assets are considerable, but they still don't make Green Mansions a good film.
