Review by Hans J. Wollstein

Despite the presence of such scene stealers as bucolic Stuart Erwin, wisecracking Patsy Kelly (in her feature film debut), laconic Ned Sparks, and volatile Fifi D'Orsay, Going Hollywood is somewhat lethargic. The blame for that belongs squarely to a seemingly sleepwalking Marion Davies, who delivers her dialogue as if she would rather be somewhere else. A very young Bing Crosby, meanwhile, is at his crooning best and his renditions of the title tune and the stirring "Temptation" remain the musical's absolute highlights. It's just too bad that screenwriter Donald Ogden Stewart failed to give Kelly, Sparks, Erwin, D'Orsay, and company anything interesting to say or do.
