Review by Craig Butler

There's no doubt that Go Naked in the World is a lurid and at time simply ridiculous melodrama. But it's also one that exerts a certain kind of pull that many will find hard to resist. Its appeal is certainly not due to the story, which is a variation on La Traviata and tells for the millionth time the story of a hooker with a heart of gold who is destroyed by a man who cannot accept that she is capable of actual, genuine love. And its appeal exists despite (or perhaps in a perverse way, because of) some dialogue that is incredibly artificial and excessively melodramatic. With Ranald MacDougall's surface-oriented direction, what we have is clearly nothing more than high gloss trappings on a tired story, but it works. Credit Gina Lollonrigida for much of its success. Not necessarily the world's greatest actress, she's perfect for this part and her physical magnetism alone works a great deal of magic. Anthony Franciosa is appropriately manly, even when his character is portrayed as somewhat wimpy, and Ernest Borgnine rages in his patented style. Great art Naked is not, but it's certainly engrossing.
