Review by Craig Butler

Although Getting Gertie's Garter is the kind of fluffy confection that's so light that a slight breeze could easily blow it clear across the country, it's still an amiable and enjoyable little trifle, provided one is in the mood for such a thing. One also has to be tolerant of severely dated pieces, for the crisis in Garter is one that modern audiences will find a bit ridiculous. Still, if one is able to put oneself in the proper frame of mind, Garter is quite a lot of silly fun. As stated, the story is stuff and nonsense, but the script is quite well constructed, with plenty of slamming doors and people hiding away from each other -- typical farce situations, but handled quite well. And the screenplay also has a good amount of genuine humor -- if not necessarily true wit -- in the dialogue. Best of all, Garter has Dennis O'Keefe, turning in a wonderful comedic performance that is high on physicality without spilling over into gross caricature. O'Keefe is quite appealing here, and his performance carries the film over some potential rough spots. He's ably abetted by fine turns from the delectable Marie McDonald, as well as from Barry Sullivan and Binnie Barnes. Those in the mood for a very amusing, totally undemanding evening would do well to give Garter a whirl.
