Synopsis by Mark Deming

Racist violence takes on a new and terrifying form in this independent drama from the U.K. Sherko (Sherko Zen-Aloush) is a Kurdish refugee who has settled in a neighborhood in Glasgow where a steady wave of new immigrants has not been made to feel welcome. Sherko's daughter, Resa (Benae Hassan), has developed a serious lingering illness, and as Sherko consults with Dhoudy (Robina Qureshi), a case worker who helps Kurds seeking asylum in the U.K., and Annie (Morag Caulder), a physician, they begin to consider the possibility that racists have been purposefully infecting Resa and other immigrants in the neighborhood with the anthrax virus. Shot on digital video, Gas Attack was screened in competition at the 2001 Edinburgh Film Festival as part of the "Focus on British Cinema" series.
