Garshome is a melodrama which deals with the effects of economic migration on individuals and their families. Intellectual Nazrudden spends several years in the oil-rich Arabian Gulf to support his family, who are left behind in India. An idealist to the core, he is not involved in get-rich-quick schemes. As he returns poorer than when he left, discontent begins to brew in his family. But he is determined never to go back. He pawns his wife's jewelry and borrows money from loan sharks to start a hardware shop, which is confiscated by Sales Tax authorities whom he refuses to bribe. Nazrudeen has no choice but to return to his solitary existence in the Gulf. Well-known Malayalam actor Murali carries his role with conviction. The scenes in which he meets his idol Mahatma Ghandi add a surrealist dimension, and the film features outstanding lensing by acclaimed cinematographer Sunny Joseph. Garshome won several awards from the State of Kerala, India, including Second Best Feature Film, Best Story Writer, and Best Child Female Artist. P.T. Kunhi Mohammed received the Best Script award of the 4th International Kerala Film Festival. The film also received the first John Abraham Award, created by the Federation of Film Societies of India in memory of director John Abraham. Garshome competed at the 1999 International Film Festival of India and the 4th International Film Festival of Kerala, 1999.
