Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali presents the true story of Gangubai Kathiawadi, a young woman who is tricked by her boyfriend to move to Mumbai in order to pursue a film career. Instead of making it as an actress, Ganga (Alia Bhatt) is sold into prostitution. Despite falling to this fate, Ganga rose to become a powerful madam and drug dealer, with underworld connections so strong that she was capable of ordering murders. Later in life, she fought for better working conditions for women and orphans associated with the sex trade in Mumbai.
