Artist, writer, and actor Roberts Blossom had led a remarkable life long before he made his film appearance in 1971. Raised in deep poverty during the Depression, Blossom was reading The Communist Manifesto by flashlight as a child, and declared himself a conscientious objector during World War II, stating he had attained spiritual enlightenment as an "independent yogi," though the Army responded by placing him in a mental hospital. Following a number of creative and spiritual paths, Blossom began to establish himself as a stage actor off Broadway in the 1950s, and helped to form a pioneering, avant-garde, multimedia theater troupe in the early '60s. In the early '70s, Blossom began playing supporting characters in a number of movies (his lone lead role was in the bizarre cult-horror film Deranged), and he developed a small but loyal following for his distinctive, memorable portrayals.
