Synopsis by Kathryn Tamms

The two car bombs that exploded simultaneously at United States embassies in Kenya and Tanzania on Friday, August 7, 1998, killed 268 people and injured more than 5,000. CIA and FBI investigators quickly identified Osama Bin Laden, a Saudi millionaire-in-exile, as the mastermind behind the attacks. The question that now needed to be answered was whether the bombings were the work of an individual terrorist, or whether they represented the roots of an even deeper hatred toward the United States. Frontline and the New York Times investigate Bin Laden, his followers, and the embassy bombings.
