Synopsis by Hal Erickson

After headlining a series of hokey WWI propaganda pictures, dancing star Irene Castle settled down in a somewhat more sedate domestic melodrama titled The First Law. When her surgeon father loses his fortune, Norma Webb (Castle) turns her family home into a boarding house. Her first and only customer is young philanthropist Hugh Godwin (Antonio Moreno), who immediately falls in love with the heroine. Despite his feelings towards Norma, Hugh cannot help but be disturbed by her strange nocturnal behavior, in which she claims to be haunted by the ghosts of her past. It turns out that Norma is being victimized by her long-lost husband, who brought about her father's ruin and intends to do the same to Norma and Hugh. As to why all of this is going on, the scriptwriter and director didn't seem to be too sure. One thing is certain, however; had Norma called the police in the first place, as she does in the final scene, the whole megilla might never have happened.
