Review by Craig Butler

Fingers at the Window is a minor work, but one that is quite pleasant and goes down easily. Oh, there are quite a few problems, most of them centered around the screenplay, which sometimes goes for thrills simply because it seemed a good time to do so, not because the plot actually called for some at the time. There's also a mixture of comedy and suspense/horror that isn't always mixed in the proper proportions, diluting at times the intended humor and/or fright. And there are a number of unanswered questions (such as, "Why are these people using axes to commit their murders?") that are a bit annoying. But Lew Ayres and Laraine Day are such agreeable company that most viewers will overlook the script problems and delight in the easy chemistry between the two stars. There's also a dependably powerful turn from Basil Rathbone, who is wonderfully sinister. While made somewhat on the cheap, the film still boasts some nice noir-ish effects. On the whole, Fingers is an amiable little murder mystery -- undemanding, but effective.
