Synopsis by Augustine Chay
Director Jiayan "Jenny" Shi's documentary examines the legal, moral, and emotional complexities that unfolded after Yingying Zhang, a visiting Chinese scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, was kidnapped and murdered by Brent Christensen (a former graduate student at the university) in 2017. Shi examines the parallels between Zhang’s life and her own, while foregrounding the grief and difficulties that Zhang’s parents and boyfriend endured in the wake of her disappearance.
