Paramount did their imported opera diva Mary Ellis no favors by dumping her into this mess of a film, which cannot quite decide whether to be a musical-comedy (complete with an Edgar Kennedy on the loose), a whodunit, or an old-fashioned and rather puritanical melodrama. In the same vein, Ellis, whose supposedly fatal charms are not entirely supported by the evidence at hand, seems to alternately mimic Jeanette MacDonald and Theda Bara. The results, simply put, are somewhat ludicrous.
