Review by Jeremy Wheeler

This grassroots gore flick from the writing/directing team of brothers Rob and Neil Taylor is an atrociously lame homage to the early films of Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson. Sadly, it fails on every level, inspiring only headaches and groans from the audience to which the film is obviously trying to cater. If anything, Evil Cult is the perfect example of horror fans just not understanding the conventions that they're desperately trying to ape. What results is pure late-night public-access material -- the kind you tune in to for sheer curiosity's sake but end up shutting off after an unbearable five minutes. Filled with heinous dialogue written on a prepubescent level, with embarrassing performances from all involved, this is the kind of junk that should appeal only to the lowest common denominator of straight-to-video fright fans. Other poor souls might be enthused by its shocking trash and schlock value, but just watch and see who's laughing after being battered by the seemingly endless 90-minute running time and slurry of unneeded endings. Noteworthy solely for its use of cheap computer graphics (which were not readily available to no-budget filmmakers prior to the early 2000s), Evil Cult is unfunny, uninspired, and ingloriously awful. Watch at your own risk -- you've been warned.
