Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith

Ethics in America is a ten-part series that employs the Socratic teaching method to help viewers thoroughly examine and question how ethical values are formed. This episode examines the many ethical dilemmas that arise at war. Must soldiers always follow orders, or can they make decisions based on critical information unknown to superiors? How much responsibility does a superior have for his soldiers? The panelists include newsmen Peter Jennings and Mike Wallace, General William Westmoreland, and Brent Scowcroft. Harvard law professors Arthur Miller and Charles R. Nesson are among the panel moderators. Other series episodes address such issues as politics and privacy, defending people accused of murder, and corporate takeovers.
