Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith

Ethics in America is a ten-part series that employs the Socratic teaching method to help viewers thoroughly question and understand how ethical values are formed. This particular volume looks at how far society must go to protect the rights of alleged criminals. Crime victims' rights and the government's duty to protect law-abiding citizens are also reviewed. The panelists include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, philosopher John Smith, and defense attorney Jack Litman. Harvard law professors Arthur Miller and Charles R. Nesson are among the panel moderators. Other episodes address such issues as politics and privacy, corporate takeovers, and capital punishment.
