Synopsis by Mark Deming

A handful of twenty-somethings discover the respect and security their parents knew in the workplace has become a thing of the past in this satiric comedy from filmmaker Federico Rizzo. Gianfranco (Angelo Pisani) is a bright and hard-working young man who has just received a university degree in the study of volcanoes. However, there isn't much of a job market for people with Gianfranco's particular skills, and when he's abruptly kicked out of the family nest, he needs to find a job fast. Gianfranco ends up with a temp job doing telephone surveys alongside a number of similarly well-educated young people who've been thrust into the Real World during an economic tailspin. Gianfranco's girlfriend Marzia (Isabella Tabarini) fares even worse; her degree in journalism proves to be all but worthless, and she ends up working for a phone sex hotline. As Gianfranco and Marzia struggle to stay afloat as they deal with low paying and demeaning work, they and their colleagues become fed up with their situation and dream of rebellion. Fuga Dal Call Center (aka Escape From The Call Center) was an official selection at the 2009 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
