Review by Buzz McClain

It's a dreary night at the bijou if this is the only thing showing. Just as he did with The Yakuza Way, director Shundo Ohkawa doesn't focus his story enough to create intensity. There are very few thrills in Double Deception, and the suspense is created very cheaply, so that it doesn't last very long. The night scenes are incredibly dark; the day scenes are oddly dreary. Worse, the film has a terrible actress in Rei Kikiawa, who is unquestionably lovely to look at but shrill to listen to. Louis Mandylor seems to realize this and registers a vapid reaction to just about everything she says. There's one nifty twist near the end, but it's not worth sticking it out to see what's up. And whomever had the idea to outfit the great Udo Kier with a cocked cowboy hat -- well, his people should be calling their people right now.
