Synopsis by Mark Deming

DJ Screw was a remarkably influential hip-hop DJ from Houston, TX, who created a signature "chopped and screwed" sound by cranking the speed of his turntables down and using digital editing techniques on the swampy grooves that emerged. The result was a thick, vaguely menacing sound that mirrored the exaggerated sense of time and space brought on by "sippin' syrup" -- drinking codeine cough syrup for kicks, a popular pastime on the Texas hip-hop scene which, ironically, was partially responsible for DJ Screw's death in the fall of 2000. DJ Screw & the Screwed-Up Click: Soldiers United for Cash is a documentary which looks at Screw's life, his music, and his crew, featuring a soundtrack of his trademark "screwed" remixes.
