In this travelog-style documentary, a camera crew journeyed from St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad, then Stalingrad, and at various times Petrograd) to Moscow in March, 1991. The crew stops at various locations along the 400 mile route, and they take in such sights as a band of gypsies, who are interviewed, an amateur ballet, the activities of some ice fishermen, the St. Petersburg naval academy and local markets. However, the omnipresence of poverty in Russia at that time makes an upbeat, optimistic tone difficult to maintain.
