Tom Mix's loyal fans reportedly did not quite cotton to their hero having forsaken the range in favor of Merry Olde England. Perhaps scenes such as Tom actually hiding behind leading lady Kathleen Myers' petticoats did little to change their minds but the sequence remains utterly charming. And despite the deplorable state of surviving prints, Mix's escape on his trusted steed Black Bess is extremely well executed by director John Blystone and must have appeared as exciting to moviegoers of the 1920s as a first rate car chase is to today's audiences.
