As one of the longest-standing of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (the Great Pyramid has outlasted both it and the other five), the famed Lighthouse at Alexandria, Egypt, was erected around 290 A.D. on the island of Pharos and lasted for almost 1,200 years. For centuries, it qualified as the tallest manmade structure in existence, with a light beam that covered a radius of 35 miles. Then, around 1480 A.D., an earthquake brought it toppling to the ground. The final resting place of the remnants qualifies as one of history's most baffling enigmas. In the A&E/History Channel special Deep Sea Detectives: The Pharoah's Lost Treasure, scientists travel to Alexandria and use state-of-the-art underwater technology and historical records to locate a number of stones that they believe were used in the construction of the original lighthouse, while other historians disconcur and assert that it actually stood in an alternate location.
